From Homeschool Week to HCBC Staff

Matthew Brandt can’t exactly remember the first time he and his family attended their first Homeschool Week at HCBC. He thinks he was about five years old. What he remembers are the marine biology classes, family outings, and friends he made. Later he remembers being excited about being on Summer Staff, first for two weeks, then a month, and then, in 2019, for five weeks. Matt served on staff for the full summer seasons of 2020-2021, a growing experience. After finishing high school, Matthew gave thought to “what comes next?” That’s when he decided to apply for HCBC’s gap year program, Waypoint. He wanted to spend time intentionally looking at his life and where God’s impact could be. He wanted an experience that would benefit him in the long run. Waypoint did that.

This summer, Matt worked full-time and served as head of the boys’ dormitory. He sees his role there as providing an environment where the young men on staff can grow spiritually. He is working in the kitchen with Food Services Director Michael Russo. Matthew finds the work to be challenging and an opportunity to learn and grow. He and Mike have similar work styles, and Matt is impressed with Mike’s story and work ethic.

Matt is the third generation in his family to work at HCBC. His mom, Betsy, his great uncle, Mark Howard, his great aunt, Susan Rohrer, and many cousins have shared the wonderful experience of working at the conference. HCBC is the place “where Christ finds people and changes lives.” Whether through Homeschool Week, the Summer Staff and Waypoint programs, or the work experience, God can draw, nurture, and grow His people at HCBC.
